Current Statement

Elise thinks about ghosts a lot. Both in the literal sense of an embodied spirit and the ways in which people, memories (both good and bad), and trauma can be haunting - regardless of corporeal boundaries. The phrase “You Are Haunting”, which appears across my current body of work, could have many interpretations. However, what I am trying to encourage viewers to consider is how our actions and interactions have an impact and, unfortunately, it is often the tragic and ugly interactions that have the longest lingering impact. You Are Haunting is meant to prompt the viewer to think about who, or what they might be haunting, and why. By nature of being human there exists simultaneity of being haunted, while also haunting. On an individual scale, how does one sit with knowing what it is to feel pain while also knowing we’ve caused it? What does it mean to be someone else’s ghost?

Over the past year I have been working through these thoughts by building a relationship between the intangibility of making with light via cyanotypes, and the confrontational nature of the written word. Through cyanotype, light becomes the translatory medium that exposes the light sensitive chemicals while my role is simply to create voids. The text comes from stencils drawn by hand while I do nothing to try and hide the evidence of the process. I want each banner to be haunted in and of itself. Most recently, I have been playing with further manipulations of the banners though experimentations in lighting, wind, weaving, and general obfuscation.
